AnneMarie van Splunter is a visual artist based in Amsterdam who engages with commissions in public space, sculptural environments, video, and local community projects.
Her artistic practice is very versatile, comprising video projects like A Day Such As This, where children reveal a view of Amsterdam or Amman, Jordan, from their window as they open their curtains in the morning or ephemeral installations like Salina, a floor relief made of 3800 kilos of salt.
Her sculptural, commissioned artworks in the public domain have an autonomous quality, yet often can simultaneously be used in different ways. The movement of the passer-by, an invitation to play or dwell on that spot, plays an important part in the concept development.
Monumental and poetical are ondulating concrete playgrounds and a terrazzo flowerbench for schoolchildren, steel park gates and a citypark bench made of wood and local reed which constitutes a shared environment for humans and insects.
An architectural approach informed by mathematical patterns or modules, curved forms that recall nature and architecture and precise use of tactile materials, characterise AnneMarie’s work.
Resting on a deep interest how we, being within an urban environment, connect with nature, AnneMarie aimes to create beneficial, inviting places that enhance our sensory perception and evoke a poetical idea of lightness and serenity.
Commissioners include the Darat al Funun Museum in Jordan, the Dowse Art Museum in New Zealand and the Dutch Government Buildings Agency.
Recently she worked 3 months in Istanbul as a laureate of BeMobile-Create Together!,a programm of the French Institute in Turkey, the Dutch Embassy, the Goethe-Institute en the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts.
